Variety spices the work of a generalist

A partner in Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher (GD&C), one of the world's largest law firms, Rory Hernandez litigates complex actions in the world of high finance and defends clients from a broad range of claims, including securities litigation and health care law. Hernandez was instrumental in litigating a landmark securities issue through various appeals to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, inspiring legislation that established new requirements in the federal securities law area.

Hernandez was introduced to GD&C through an externship with Judge Arthur Alarcon of the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. "It was key to everything I have done since," Hernandez said. "I was involved in researching and writing bench memos and assisting the Court in preparing written opinions. And, as I neared graduation, it was Judge Alarcon who arranged an interview for me with Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher." Hernandez had also served as Note and Comment Editor of the Southwestern University Law Review. He is active once again as a member of Southwestern's Board of Trustees.

With offices in London, Paris and cities across the United States, GD&C's more than 700 attorneys are involved in antitrust and trade regulation, appellate and constitutional law, white collar crime, corporate restructuring, consumer class actions, intellectual property and a host of other specialized areas of law.

As a generalist in the litigation department, Hernandez's clients include hospitals, financial institutions and pharmaceutical companies. "Every day is different for a generalist," Hernandez said. "Each client is different. You need to be adaptable. There is still a need for good,well-rounded lawyers who can handle any kind of case."
